fun.

Over the last couple weeks I started street skateboarding again. I honestly forgot how much fun it is. You get comfortable knowing you can go to a skate park and not get hassled by anyone, but with street skating you have to make things work. I love it. Yesterday I went skating with my buddy Ted Kim, and he got a couple shots of me that he added to the vid below. More skating to come!

"things i like about texas" a new zine by allison v. smith

Today was an exciting day. I received Allison V. Smith's newest zine in the mail. The zine is named "Things I Like About Texas". This is Allison's third zine. This one is a collection of photographs all shot with 35mm cameras. One thing I noticed and really enjoyed is all the photos were taken horizontally. A couple of my favorites were "shotgun" and "loco mariachi".
The zine is printed on a beautiful matt paper and comes with a couple AVS stickers. If you were lucky enough the first 30 or so zines came with a little 5-7 print.
She is selling them fast! There were only 250 of them made and I got 156, so get on it. You can order them from her blog here

and they are only $23.00!

The photo above was taken of Roland and I at my opening of "art and the land"/"Newtok" at The Alaska House Gallery NY.

Today I received word from Trina at the gallery, that the show is hanging indefinitely. So if you haven't seen it, go check it out.
Ed Pilkington from London's The Guardian and I spent three days in Alaska's village of Newtok. We spent our time interviewing locals and documenting the effects of the coastal erosion the village is suffering from. Resulting in ten photos hanging in the Alaska House.

Everyone that knows me well, knows I like to stay up late and sleep in. On Tuesday morning at 9am I started getting phone calls from Time. I assumed they were still interested in using the photos of Palin I took a month ago for Runners World. The embargo is still on the photos so I didn't want to get up just to tell them "I can't do anything about it". So I kept sleeping. A few minutes later I got a text from my rep Kelly at Rapport saying "wake up. have time mag shoot 4 u in 3 hrs!". That got me up and scrambling. I called Time right away and they said "we need you to be out at Palins home in three hours, can you do it?" There was no saying no, it's Time! So I called my other client and asked if they wouldn't mind if I rescheduled for the next day. They understood. I started calling around looking for an assistant, couldn't get ahold of any of my usuals so I called Marian Call down the street. She was down so we packed up and bolted. We were just about to leave town when the editor called and told us Sarah wouldn't be home until 2:30pm. So Marian and I headed back to my place to regroup. We arrived at the Palins home at 2:30pm. We scouted out where we wanted to shoot and did some light tests. After finding our locations and doing our light tests, one of Sarah's people tells us she wouldn't be home until 6pm. So we waited.
Sarah arrived at 5:45pm, we started shooting at 6:00pm and we were done by 6:30pm. She was as pleasant as always but I could tell she was a little tired from the day.
After the shoot Marian and I headed straight back to Anchorage to get some food and a brew. After dinner I started editing the photos. Editing the photos was fairly easy and fast considering there wasn't that many. What took a long time was FTPing the photos out to both Time and Rapport. I was up until about 4:30am making sure they were all making it out.
At 6:30-7:00 am'ish I received a call from Time's editor telling me "your going to be excited Brian." "It's a cover".

Today I picked up the film from my latest road trip up the Alcan with Marian Call. I started with her in Seattle. We then went to Vancouver, Banff, Calgary, Edmonton, White Horse and then Home {Anchorage, AK}. We took our time and spent a week wondering around the cities and taking tons of photos along then way. Above are a few from the trip. If you would like to see more I posted some on flickr here.

palin for runners world magazine.

palin for runners world.
a couple of my favs from the shoot.

About a month ago, I photographed Sarah Palin for Runners World Magazine. RW posted the interview on their website a few days ago. It has been fun watching them hit every major news website and blog soon after--msnbc, abc news, just to name a couple. I didn't think they would stir up that much press, but after Palin said in the interview that she could beat Obama in a race, things got a little crazy.

The shoot was fun. This was my second time having a portrait session with the Governor, and both times she was a pleasure to photograph. The first time I photographed her was in Juneau, AK. I wasn't able to bring an assistant along, which made it a little more difficult because I had to control the light and reload all of my own film. But she was very patient with me, which made it less stressful. This shoot for Runners World was wonderful. The shoot was in Wasilla, AK so I was able to bring Michael franklin along as my assistant.

The best part was that before the shoot Todd Palin had called me asking me how long it would take to photograph her, and although I said I would be happy with 45 minute, they ended up giving me three hours. It was very nice of them, especially considering that they were headed off to NY that night.
