120j: back from the dead

2010 © brian adams
After some extensive surgery {gaffers tape}, my beloved Sunpak 120j flash is back on it's feet. A couple of months ago, while photographing musician Tim Easton on the beautifully windy Turnagain Arm, the flash took a nasty fall right onto some rocks, breaking its head right off and ripping off the tripod mount. But, we are happy to say, 120j is back and ready for work!

Here are a few photos of sunpak in her prime. :)

museum & 61˙ north

2010 © Ashley Skabar
Yesterday, Ashley and I photographed the opening of the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center in the Anchorage Museum of History & Art. I went there knowing that I had two pieces in the new displays, but to my surprise I also had a 15x13 ft wall mural! The photo is a detail shot of ice fishing in Kivalina, Alaska taken in 2007. I am very honored to have three permanent photographs in Museum and I owe it all to Dawn Biddison for seeking me out and encouraging me to submit photos. Thanks, Dawn!

In other good news, the Anchorage Daily News just launched 61˙ North, their new glossy Sunday magazine insert today! Above are a few photos I shot for the publication. I am excited to see what's to come of this magazine, and I hope the rest of Anchorage is excited about it, too! You can view the whole magazine here.

As many of you know, Ash and I have been working together on many projects. As a result, we have decided to start working on a website to showcase our collaborative effort, but in the meanwhile, we have launched a blog where you can keep up with what we have been up to! We love blogging and sharing our work! You can check out our blog here.
On a side note: we are actually in Sitka, Alaska right now working with the Institute of the North on the Emerging Leaders Dialogue. More on that soon. But above are a few photos of our first day here.

Tomorrow, Ash and I will be leaving for Sitka, Alaska. Sitka is one of my favorite places in AK; I can't wait to show it to Ash. We will be there for five days covering the Emerging Leadership Dialogue conference for the Institute of the North. Stay tuned for plenty of blog posts!

bbq

Tonia & justin

Last night, Ash and I hosted a BBQ for our beloved Kaladi Brothers Coffee crew (City Market location). Above are a couple of photos from the night. Tonia and Justin came over for a quick reindeer dog, then ran off to the Ra Ra Riot show at Moose's Tooth pub. Film will be coming from the shoot in the next couple of days.
The day before the BBQ, Ash and I were at Indian Valley Meats where they were nice enough to give us two boxes of reindeer bones. Ash and I have been wanting to make roasted bone marrow out of reindeer ever since we went to Prune in NY, where we were first introduced to the dish. Ash popped the bones in the oven at 450F for fifteen minutes until they were golden brown and bubbly, then served them with a simple parsley salad, crusty bread and Hawaiian sea salt. They came out amazing!

ted kim - skateboard

Ted Kim - mellon grab

Last summer, I was introduced to Ted Kim, a wonderful skateboarder, film maker, artist, husband, and father. We clicked right away and started filming and photographing skateboarding together. Ted is currently working on his fourth skate video, due to premier at the end of this Alaskan summer. Above is an edit of a nose-slide I did in Anchorage, AK that will be in the next video. Instead of one teaser for his movie, Ted is making separate teasers for each skateboarder that will be featured in the movie.

You can see more of Ted's videos here.
