On Sunday, Ash and I were able to catch up with former Alaskan and music producer Erik Braund. Erik has been living in Brooklyn, NY for the last few years and recently graduated from the Clive Davis Dept. of Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts. Erik will be starting his master’s at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program in the Fall 2010 term.

I love waking and retiring with another artist everyday. Brian is a constant source of inspiration to me in my writing, and I love assisting him in his creative projects. This week, my poem, "The Photographer", a poem inspired by Brian, appeared in the recent issue of The Dirty Napkin Literary Magazine, and although my name is on the byline, I know that I couldn't have written it without him. And it made me think: my last name will soon be Adams, not Skabar!

This week, Ash and I had the pleasure of spending two days at the Alaska Native Heritage Center photographing the facility for their marketing department. I wanted to photograph the Center in a way I haven't seen before. We kept it simple, taking just three lenses and one off-camera flash. Although it was cloudy on both days, I think the clouds added a great dramatic effect to the photos. Above is a small edit of our shoots.

what's new

Prune Restaurant

This month has been amazing, particularly last week. On Sunday, June 6th I proposed to Ash. She said yes. We are planning on getting married August 21, 2010, and we are so excited! The amount of support from our family and friends has been amazing. We can't thank everyone enough for their support and willingness to help out in the arrangements. Above are a few photos from our week in NY. You can also view more here.

While in NY, Ash and I were able to meet up with Newsweek's photo editor Michelle Molloy. As soon as we walked into Newsweek's offices, we could feel the excitement of the newsroom. It was wonderful to see Michelle again and introduce her to my fiance, and it was perfect timing: Michelle was in need of photos of a church in Wasilla, AK that Sarah Palin attends. After a little digging, we found the photos and the result is above. Then, after getting some work done, we all went out to a great little Italian restaurant, Ino, and celebrated our engagement, the industry we all love, and good food. A deep thanks goes out to Michelle and the Newsweek team for taking the time to meet with us and make our trip even more memorable.

Also while in NY, I got a call from my good friend Mark Thompson. While he was on his way to Portland, OR, he opened up the new Thrasher skateboard magazine and saw my photo above of Will Ingram doing a nose-slide in Anchorage, AK.

Ash and I couldn't have had such an amazing trip without the help from so many people. To name a few: Roland Adams, Mom, Pops, Emily and Zach, Ed Pilkington and family, Michelle Molloy, and the wonderful staff at Prune Restaurant.

These are amazing times! There's a lot more news to come, but all in good time. Thanks for all the patience in my lack of blogging.

Best. B

engaged!

Originally posted on brian & ash.

NOTE: The following post is going to be written by both of us.

Ash: Let me start this by saying that I never thought I'd get married, and after a long cohabiting relationship went sour five years ago, I was content working and living alone. I thought that that was how it was always going to be. I liked my space, liked my home. I loved my friends, my cat, my routines. So, I never thought that I'd fall in love all-in, or so to say, and I definitely never thought I'd be happier with someone else than I was by myself.

But when I first saw Brian and then we first spoke, I knew that that was it. This was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, wanted to work with, wanted to love and grow old with. Since the very first day.

Since the day that we met, Brian and I have lived with each other, worked with each other, and loved each other, and I have loved every single minute of it. He inspires me. He is the best person I've ever met. I love him.

Brian: You never think there is a "one" until you meet the "one." Ash is the "one." From the first moment I saw her and spoke to her, I knew. We are both people that don't make light decisions; we know what we want, and we do it with all of our heart. But when we met there was no decision to make; it was already done. I have never had any second guesses or felt any hesitation with Ash. She keeps me calm, collected, inspired, driven, and wanting more out of this wonderful life. Now, I am happy I don't have to go it alone. In the last 10 months of living, loving, and working together we have seen and done so much that I can't wait to see what we can do in a lifetime. I love her.

Ash: Last night, in New York City at our favorite restaurant, Prune, Brian had reserved "our" table for dinner. Before we ordered a thing, he reached across the table, grabbed my hand, and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes, after which he slipped on the most perfect ring I could ever imagine. He already knew the answer, and I already knew he would ask, but it didn't matter; we were both so nervous and excited that we started to cry, told each other how much we love each other, that we can't believe that we have been lucky enough to find each other. That this is it. That here we go. That life will always be good while we're together. That hell yeah.

The chefs and staff at Prune overwhelmed us with their generosity and enthusiasm, bringing out flutes of champagne and marinated veal heart ("a heart for a proposal makes sense," said one of the waiters) to celebrate with us. We cannot thank them enough for taking part in our special evening and joining us in excitement. And, of course, the food was amazing. (Good food usually comes from really good people, after all.)

Brian and Ash: Hell Yeah.

home base poetry

2010 © brian adams
A few months ago, Ash was commissioned to teach poetry to a group of Anchorge students of the Home Base After School Program, ages 9-13, at the culmination of which she helped them assemble and produce a book of their poems. Home Base is a program focused on providing "at risk youth" in Anchorage, Alaska positive learning experiences and opportunities in the hours following school, and the woman who runs the program, Shirley Mae, is incredible: last year, she was able to bring ten of the students to Ghana, where they visited the Stilt Village of Nzulezo and bonded with the students there.

After Ash invited me to take portraits of the students for the book, it was obvious to me that the kids at Home Base were way ahead of most secondary schools or any other after school program I have been a part of.

Ash and I are both so proud of the kids and look forward to watching the progress of their futures and the people they will become.

Above are a few photos of their new poetry book, available at our favorite downtown coffee shop, Side Street Espresso!
