new environmental set up.

sunpak 120j with soft box

I have been a long time fan of the sunpak 120j bare bulb flash. I love the light it puts out by itself. But every once and awhile I wish I could put a soft box on it for environmental portraits. I wanted something quick{Because it's cold in Alaska}.. Something easy to put up and take down. I also wanted to be able to put it on my tripod for all the uneven ground I find myself on.
I have found it! I love chimera. They never let me down. The soft box ring it quick and the soft box is just right for a single portrait. Quick and easy! Sweet.

natural light love

snow men on the park strip
snow men on the park strip

I was driving home the other day and I didn't really feel like going back behind the computer so I took a big detour. while I was aimlessly driving around I came across these snow men on the park strip. The sun had pretty much already set but I decided to go check them out anyways. The clouds blew me away! So I got my camera out and started as quickly as possible before I lost the remaining light that I had. The mixture of the hasselblad and the kodak portra 400nc was perfect. I love natural light!!

amazing

amazing.

Clark just sent me this link to this amazing photographer named Joey L. I am not easily impressed these days by new photographers. I find that for some reason I always prefer the work of older or in most cases dead photographers. Its odd. But as soon as I saw Joey L's work I felt butter flies in my stomach. Beautiful.

pearl and the bird

pearl

This morning my brother Roland and I woke up to the interesting mess of feathers and a dead bird in our living room. Apparently a bird some how got into the house, we are thinking it came in through the garage because there is a crack at the top of the door. The mess of feathers started in the garage and moved its way upstairs and into the living room. Poor bird. Crazy wonderful Pearl.

portrait of us by Zoe Strauss.

On First Friday visiting artist Zoe Strauss from Philadelphia was at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art taking portraits of the first 200 people to come through the gallery. Leah and I had our awesome portrait taken and then on Sunday Leah surprised me with this beautifully value villaged framed photo. Thanks Leah. Really I love it!
Also I would like to say thanks to Zoe Strauss for spending some time here in AK. Her Wednesday lecture and photos of her book "America" were wonderful. I look forward to keeping an eye out for her work.
here is a link to her blog and website.

my favorite grain finder

On Saturday I spent my night cleaning out a room we have in the garage. The idea is to build a darkroom that is available to friends that are interested in black & white printing. I pulled everything out of the room, vacuumed, swept and dusted everything. After putting in the enlargers and developing supplies in I ended up having more room then I realized, so thats good. I am extremely excited to start printing again! Also thanks to Michael Franklin, Dean Paulson and Scott Pugh for donating everything! Extra thanks to Dean for giving me my absolute favorite grain finder and timer.

boisen.

sarah on left.

I have spoken to a few classes and taught at a couple workshops but I always wondered if any of the students ever got anything out of it. Sarah Boisen was one of the students that attended the Photographic workshop I taught at the Big Easy Snowboard Camp. In the letter below I was very pleased to hear that she is still pursuing photography! I know she will do well and I can't wait to see her work in the future.

hey brian! i know its been forever, but i was looking through big easy photos the other day and it reminded me of you! you'll be excited to hear that i've declared a photography major here in seattle! im working on an internship with a snowboard/skateboard team here which is EXACTLY what i want to pursue with photography. the big easy really got me into it, and i wanted to thank you for putting up with me knowing absolutely NOTHING about photography and showing me how awesome it is to have a camera in my hands at all times :)

hope all is going great in alaska!
